Can’t open or create file InDesign hangs, freezes

Issue

When you open an existing document or create a new one, InDesign hangs, freezes, or endlessly displays the progress indicator.

Reason

In some cases, this is caused by corrupt data related to the Smart INdependent Glyphlets (SING) component, which handles use of single glyph font files used to represent custom glyph needs to extend standard font glyph sets. This is primarily used in Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) documents.

Solution

Solution 1: Clear the SING Datastore folder.
Quit InDesign (force quit, if necessary).
Move the following folder to the desktop:
Mac OS: [Startup Disk] /Library/Applications Support/Adobe/SING/Mark II/Datastore
Note: This is in the Library folder on the root of your startup disk. There is a similar path in your user folder, but that is not the path you need to work in.
Windows 7/Vista: C:ProgramDataAdobeSINGMark IIDatastore
Windows XP: C:Documents and SettingsAll UsersApplication DataAdobeSINGMark IIDatastore
Relaunch InDesign.
Attempt to reproduce the problem.
If the problem is NOT resolved with the solution above, proceed to Solution 2.

Solution 2: Remove the SING component.
Note: Users who do not receive .indd files from users of the CJK versions of InDesign can function perfectly fine without the SING component.

Quit InDesign (force quit, if necessary).
Move the following folder to the desktop:
Mac OS: [Startup Disk] /Library/Applications Support/Adobe/SING/Mark II
Windows: C:Program FilesCommon FilesAdobeSINGMark II
Relaunch InDesign.
Attempt to reproduce the problem.
